Why We Started TR7

People keep asking us why we started TR7. The honest answer? We just wanted to play sevens with our mates.

We're the Leeson brothers, and we grew up in Rugby – yes, the town where the game was invented. You can't really escape it here. We played through minis, juniors, colts, and into senior rugby. It's in the blood.

But somewhere along the way, sevens became the thing we looked forward to most. End-of-season tournaments, summer festivals, the odd social competition. There's just something about the format that gets us fired up.

"Seven players, loads of space, and non-stop action. What's not to love?"

The Idea

The idea for TR7 came about late last year. We were talking about how much we missed playing sevens regularly, and how there wasn't really a team we could just... join. Most sevens teams are attached to clubs, or they're invite-only, or they're way more serious than we were looking for.

So we thought: why not start our own?

Not a club. Not a franchise. Just a team. A group of people who want to play sevens together, travel to tournaments, and enjoy the game. Simple as that.

The Name

TR7 – The Rugby 7s. It works on a few levels. We're from Rugby. We play sevens. And TR7 just looks good on a kit.

The lion came later. We wanted something bold, something that said "we're here to compete" without taking ourselves too seriously. A lion felt right – strong, proud, but not aggressive. Plus it looks absolutely massive on the shirt, which we love.

What's Next

This first year is all about building. Building a squad, building a reputation, building connections in the sevens community. We're not trying to win every tournament – we're trying to establish TR7 as a team people want to play with and against.

We've already had an amazing time at Simmer Social. Hamplified is coming up in July, which is special because it's in Rugby – home turf. Then Cheltenham to close out the summer.

After that? Who knows. More tournaments, maybe some competitive stuff if the squad's up for it. We'll see where it goes.

For now, we're just enjoying the ride. If you fancy being part of it – playing, sponsoring, or just coming to watch – get in touch. The more the merrier.

See you out there.
