What is Rugby Sevens?
If you've never watched sevens rugby before, you're in for a treat. It's the same sport, but turned up to eleven.
Rugby sevens is played on a full-size pitch, but with only 7 players per side instead of 15. The result? More space, more running, more tries, and non-stop action from start to finish.
The Basics
- 7 players per team on a full-size rugby pitch
- 7 minutes per half (14 minutes total, with a 2-minute break)
- Same rules as 15s – tries, conversions, scrums, lineouts
- Tournament format – multiple games in one day
Because there's so much space, sevens rewards speed, fitness, and skill. You can't hide. Every player needs to tackle, run, and make decisions under pressure.
Sevens has been an Olympic sport since Rio 2016 – it's how a lot of new fans discover rugby.
Why We Love It
Sevens is pure rugby. No ten phases of pick-and-go, no waiting around. When someone makes a break, they're probably going to score. When you get the ball, there's space to play.
It's also incredibly social. Tournaments are day-long events with multiple games, good atmospheres, and plenty of time to meet people between matches. That's the sevens community – competitive on the pitch, friendly off it.
Types of Sevens
There's everything from elite international circuits to local social tournaments. At TR7, we're starting with social and open tournaments – the kind where you play hard but everyone's there to enjoy themselves.
- Social tournaments – Fun, inclusive, often fancy dress
- Open tournaments – Competitive but welcoming to all levels
- Competitive leagues – More serious, structured competitions
Wherever you are on that spectrum, the game is the same: fast, skilful, and a lot of fun.
