If you've never watched sevens rugby before, you're in for a treat. It's the same sport, but turned up to eleven.

Rugby sevens is played on a full-size pitch, but with only 7 players per side instead of 15. The result is a game with massive amounts of space, incredible pace, and spectacular tries.

The Basics

  • 7 players per team on a full-size rugby pitch
  • 7 minutes per half (14 minutes total, with a 2-minute break)
  • Same rules as 15s – tries, conversions, scrums, lineouts
  • Tournament format – multiple games in one day

Because there's so much space, sevens rewards speed, fitness, and skill. You can't hide. Every player has to be fit, every player has to defend, and every player gets a chance to shine.

Sevens has been an Olympic sport since Rio 2016 – it's how a lot of new fans discover rugby.

Why We Love It

Sevens is pure rugby. No ten phases of pick-and-go, no waiting around. When someone makes a break, there's space to go. It's a beautiful, open game.

It's also incredibly social. Tournaments are day-long events with multiple games, good atmospheres, and the kind of banter you only get in rugby.

Types of Sevens

  • Social tournaments – Fun, inclusive, often fancy dress
  • Open tournaments – Competitive but welcoming to all levels
  • Competitive leagues – More serious, structured competitions

Wherever you are on that spectrum, the game is the same: fast, skilful, and a lot of fun.
